Year 9 Trash Couture Event
On Thursday 25 October, Year 9 pupils took part in their annual recycling event organised by the Geography department. Pupils took part in an ‘upcycling’ workshop which was run by North Down Borough Council and local artist Marianne Kennerley.
With the support of the DOE Rethink Waste campaign this year’s event took a Halloween theme and pupils were given the opportunity to ‘revamp’ their old t-shirts using stencils, paints and beads.
The highlight of the event was the fashion show which took place at the end of the morning. Pupils had been given the chance to design and make an outfit from recycled products that they had gathered themselves and models showed off the top designs from each form class. The overall winners were:
1st Kaitlyn Coffey from 9C
2nd Emiko Seawright from 9D
3rd Zara Simpson from 9D
Kaitlyn spent 15 hours on her dress which was made by knitting together electrical wiring from old speakers that her family were about to throw away. She then used intricately woven, rolled strips of newspaper to create the skirt section of her dress. Taking a week to make, Emiko designed a dress that was made using woven newspaper and pleated crisp packets. Zara created a hooded jacket that was made entirely from old Tesco shopping bags and her skirt was created from old ‘Simpsons’ comic books which Zara had previously read.
