Glenlola Public Speaking Success

On Thursday 5 December eight girls represented Glenlola Collegiate in the Bangor Road Safety Public Speaking competition at Bangor Grammar School.  The girls who competed were:-

Year 10           Anna McDowell, Anna McWatters and Katie Rose Gilmore.

Year 11           Samantha Dornan, Sarah Walker and Rachel McCord.

Year 13           Bethan Emerson and Martha Ward.

After listening to thirteen very interesting speeches with topics ranging from “Should the 45mph Speed Limit for New Drivers be Abolished?” to “Could Social Media Sites Contribute to the Reduction of Road Traffic Crashes?”, adjudicators Mrs D Hutchinson and members of the Newtownards and Bangor Road Safety Committee were left with the challenging job of selecting the winners in each category.

Class A            Anna McDowell was awarded 1st  place.

Class B            Sarah Walker was awarded 1st  place.

Class C            Martha Ward was awarded 2nd  place.

Overall the Glenlola team won by three points and was awarded the PSNI Cup.  We also returned to school with vital knowledge and motivation about Road Safety Public Speaking.  There is no doubt  it was a very worthwhile experience for all of us.

“There are only two more things more difficult than public speaking: climbing a wall which is leaning towards you and kissing a girl who is leaning away from you!”  Winston Churchill.
