Co-op Inspired Futures Project

Seven Year 12 pupils accompanied by Mrs Porter, travelled to Manchester over half term to take part in the ‘International Year of the Co-op Expo’. Our pupils along with seven representatives from both Hunterhouse College and Bangor Academy, had been chosen to perform in a play commissioned by the Co-op as part of its ‘Inspired Futures’ project.

Work began back in June when the girls participated in a series of workshops, facilitated by Carol Moore. Rosemary Jenkinson was then commissioned to write a short play based on the ideas which arose out of the workshops. In September, rehearsals got underway under the direction of Mary-Frances Doherty who is currently working at the new MAC Theatre in Belfast and after several weeks, the group performed to an audience of family, friends, school and Co-op representatives at the Baby Grand Theatre in Belfast.

Over half term, the group travelled to Manchester to perform at the ‘International Co-op Expo’ in Manchester Central. This was an amazing opportunity for the cast to perform in the auditorium in front of over 500 international delegates.

In addition to the performance, the group enjoyed a Ghost Walk around Manchester on Hallowe’en night, a visit to the Co-op’s British Young  Film Writers’ festival and an evening with the stars at the Film Premiere of ‘The Rochdale Pioneers’.

Everyone agreed that the whole project had been extremely worthwhile and had provided all involved with a wealth of acting experience and an opportunity to engage in new activities and make new friendships. The group will meet again in December to perform at the Baby Grand Theatre for Co-op members.
