North Down District Explorers Camp
The newly formed Glenlola Explorer Unit attended their first District event during the last weekend in March at Crawfordsburn Scout Centre. For some of the Explorers it was their first time sleeping in a tent so it was a steep learning curve to put up their tents in the dark. After the tents were pitched everyone met in the cabin were the Glenlola Explorers were officially invested into the Scout Movement by the District Commissioner for Explorers, Gary Warke. They then went off to play Wide Games with the 50 other explorers from North Down district. There was a lot of screaming and stumbling but everyone came back in one piece! Supper was an endless supply of hot dogs and burgers and the night was completed by playing some ice breaker games in the cabin. At one point an Explorer was heard to say “Why am I doing this?” as she clasped a polystyrene cup in her mouth and pretended to be a penguin!
Saturday was a busy day full of competitions and games. After a chippy tea they had a campfire in the cabin which featured lots of different songs with actions. As darkness fell the climbing tower was lit up with glowsticks and fairy lights for the evening activity of climbing and abseiling. There were a number of nervous girls standing at the bottom of the tower but after completing the climb and abseil they had a real sense of achievement.
On Sunday morning the tents were taken down and after more entertaining activities everyone headed home for a well-deserved shower and sleep! A big thank you to all the leaders in the North Down Explorer group for their welcome and hard work over the entire weekend, particularly to Gillian and Kieran for keeping us well fed and Danny for organising the Chillax part of the camp.
