Charity Award for Glenlola

Glenlola Collegiate has been recognised with a charity award after its Year 13 Drama students devised a six-week performance and dance programme for children with a learning disability.

It’s one of a number of ways in which Glenlola has contributed to the work of Positive Futures, which supports people with a learning disability, acquired brain injury or autistic spectrum condition.

Now it has received the Positive Futures Welcome Award, which recognises companies and organisations which go the extra mile in promoting inclusion of the people it supports. Previous recipients have included the BBC, Sainsbury’s and the SSE Odyssey Arena.

Girls from Glenlola have volunteered individually with the charity’s Bangor Families Service for some time, but the Year 13 drama students decided to go a step further and devised an after-school drama and dance course with the help of their Head of Year and Drama teacher, Maxine Porter. The programme will culminate in a performance by the children from Positive Futures for their parents.

The charity’s Chief Executive, Agnes Lunny, said: “This valuable activity will help the children build up their confidence, self-expression and sense of inclusion. Glenlola is a worthy recipient of our Welcome Award.”

Head of Year 13, Maxine Porter commented:

“We are humbled that the commitment and dedication of this group of caring young women in Year 13 have been recognised in this way. It is testimony to the fact that caring is not just about raising money for our local charities but also giving time to make a difference in the lives of the young people supported by Positive Futures .”
