Senior Hockey Plate Champions
On Monday 9 March Glenlola’s 1st XI secured victory in the Final of the Senior Hockey Plate against Regent House at Playball, Stormont.
First quarter
The match started with Regent dominating and Glenlola on the defense most of the quarter. Mia and the defenders did well to hold off the advances. With a few breakthroughs from Glenlola the score was 0-0 at the end of the first 15mins.
Second quarter
The Regent breakthrough came in the second quarter, with Regent taking a 1–0 lead eight minutes before halftime. Despite the setback, Glenlola responded with growing momentum, pushing forward aggressively as the quarter closed.
Third Quarter
Glenlola came out strong, applying pressure and settling into the game. Regent, however, maintained solid possession and structure. With four minutes remaining of the quarter, Glenlola pushed forward winning long corners but to no avail, Regent held firm. The quarter ended with Regent still ahead 1–0.
Fourth Quarter
The final quarter delivered end‑to‑end drama. Glenlola’s persistence paid off when Anna Jackson scored from a long‑corner play, driving through the circle, taking on multiple players and going 1V1 with the goalkeeper in the circle to level the match at 1–1.
Minutes later, Glenlola earned a series of penalty corners—three in a row—and Matilda Urry capitalised, to give Glenlola a 2–1 lead.
Regent, refusing to back down, struck back to make it 2–2 with just four minutes left. Glenlola continued to push, winning another penalty corner with three minutes to go, but the deadlock persisted through the final whistle and into the penalty runs.
Penalty runs
The match moved to penalty runs, where Glenlola kept their composure, Mia Smyth continued with her incredible saves. The five penalty runs again ended in deadlock meaning it was down to sudden death. With Glenlola having the first Vanessa Monaghan stepped up and delivered the decisive scoring run, sealing a 1–0 sudden death shootout victory and completing the Glenlola comeback!
