Explorer Scouts Summer Camp 2014

Glenlola Explorer Scouts held their first Summer Camp during July in Greenhill YMCA in Newcastle. We were blessed with beautiful blue skies for the entire camp; waterproof coats remained unpacked in their ruc sacs!  After settling in the 1st activity was bouldering in the Bloody Bridge River.  This provided a welcome relief from the heat as everyone took the opportunity to get very wet.  The next few days were packed full of activities; raft building, low ropes team work challenge, laser tag, climbing and abseiling.

Perhaps the scariest of all activities was the high initiatives challenge. Teams of four climbed up a wobbly pole and stood on the ‘bird-table’ on top. It didn’t stop there though. Once on top, they held hands and leant back to the full extent of their arms and then let go! For those who were brave enough they also got a chance to attempt the “Leap of Faith”. They climbed up the same pole but this time they jumped off it and caught a trapeze…….. well, that was the plan!

The evenings were a chance for some relaxing. We had trips into Newcastle, a sports evening and several campfires with campfire songs and of course, toasted marshmallows.

The instructors at the camp were from all over the world and made the camp special with their enthusiastic attitude. We were also very lucky to have our food prepared by “Happy Chef”. The meals were amazing and Cooper made sure that every taste was catered for.

It was a great camp; we got to know each other better, we challenged ourselves, faced our fears and most importantly had lots of fun!
