Cancer Research Poster Campaign
Queens University Belfast and Cancer Research UK joined forces to sponsor a poster competition for AS-level biology students at the end of last term. Ten of the entrants spent a day at the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology (CCRCB) at Queen’s. There they had a chance to practice lab techniques used in cancer research and take part in a career speed dating session with researchers involved in different aspects of cancer research – from lab-based research to clinical trials.
For her poster, which featured a girl looking up into a microscope and carried the headline ‘Only research funded by our generation can save hers’, Daryl Hinchcliffe from Glenlola Collegiate School was awarded the CCRCB/Nikon prize sponsored by Vector Scientific and Nikon, and received a Nikon digital camera. The competition judges commented that her entry was ‘very high quality, emotive and creative’.
Cancer Research UK was so impressed with the impact of the image and message that it has commissioned Daryl to paint the picture again, this time with a small boy looking up the microscope lens, to use to front their next campaign against prostate cancer.
Needless to say Daryl is delighted that her work has been recognised and selected for such a large and important campaign. Meanwhile the original art work has been purchased by QUB to display in the CCRB building.
