Glenlola goes Green
On Thursday 20 September 2012, pupils from Glenlola Eco-council received the Green Flag Award from Nigel McGarry from TidyNI. This means we are now an Eco-School.
This is an acknowledgement of all of the environmental work that is done through the curriculum in our classes as well as all of the environmental work that we do in our extra-curricular activities. These include: the Year 9 Recycling topic and the Recycling Fashion show, in RS the Year 12 project to make a product out of recycled materials, the development of our school garden, the workshops that the Eco-council have held with Junior school, building insect hotels, all the work of the Yellow club, the Kleensock project, the Marine Bill, our House competitions to find an Eco-code and a Logo, our short story competition; our Walk to School Days; our recycling bins and our litter free school.
Nigel commented:
‘Along with my colleague Paul Moore I had the pleasure of assessing Glenlola Collegiate for the Northern Ireland Eco Schools Green Flag Award on Thursday 20 September.
Working towards Green Flag status aims to make schools environmentally aware and ensure that sustainability becomes an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of a school.
The fostering of environmental awareness in school life can now be linked to many curriculum subjects and is helping create new generations of young people who are genuinely concerned and committed to keeping a healthy planet.
In Glenlola I found a group of determined, well informed and enthusiastic students from Year 8 to 14 who had worked to deliver excellence in the quest for a Green Flag.
I am pleased to say that excellence is what the Eco Committee delivered making the assessment one of the very best I have experienced.
Well done Glenlola – the Planet is in good hands!’
