Year 13 and 14 Physics Trip to Manchester
This year the A-Level Physics students went on an exciting trip to Manchester and Alton Towers - but it wasn’t all shopping and Krispy Kreme doughnuts! Some students experienced the physics of free-fall first-hand when they went on the ride ‘Oblivion’, which consists of a high vertical drop into a deep black hole (see what we did there? Black HoleJ that’s Physics too!). ‘On Air’ the ride covered 852m in 85s and had a G-force of 3.5g.Even while waiting in the queue for another ride, one eager student used the equation PE=mgh to calculate the potential energy at the top of one of the crests of the rollercoaster ‘Rita’.

Two sixth form students from Glenlola Collegiate, Bangor and Royal Belfast Academical Institute have spent the summer helping the RSPB carry out research as part of a Nuffield Science Bursary project aimed to find out whether provisioning of chicks was sufficient to support a productive colony of common and arctic terns breeding on a small artificial island at Belfast Lough RSPB Nature Reserve. The students, supported by the RSPB education team, presented their Nuffield Science research at a celebratory event at Queen’s University Belfast recently.
GCSE Astronomy Weekend, Folk and Transport Museum, 19 – 21 October 2012
The UFTM hosted a different type of visitor when the Glenlola GCSE Astronomers spent a weekend there. Instead of looking around the historical buildings the Year 10 and 13 girls were definitely looking upwards!
Swiss Guests visit Glenlola
On Tuesday 9 October we had a group of Swiss guests in to visit the school. The group came over from St Gallen which is celebrating 1400 years after St Gall left Bangor and headed through Europe, finally settling in Switzerland and founding the town of St Gallen which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Glenlola goes Green
On Thursday 20 September 2012, pupils from Glenlola Eco-council received the Green Flag Award from Nigel McGarry from TidyNI. This means we are now an Eco-School.
Fairtrade Green Brownies
Glenlola’s Eco-council had a ‘Bake Day’ with Junior School to make Green Brownies. The idea was to teach the Junior pupils about Fair Trade by using only ingredients with the Fair Trade label and locally sourced products.
Karate Success
Rachael Fleming a Year 8 pupil at Glenlola Collegiate has fought off steep competition to win gold at the British Karate Championships recently held in Loughborough.
GCSE Technology and Design Success for Glenlola Pupil
Jan Montgomery, a Year 13 pupil at Glenlola Collegiate, is celebrating success as she was placed second in Northern Ireland for GCSE Technology & Design.
Cool FM Bus
Developed by the PSNI and Cool FM, the project is aimed at making young people more aware of both local and global issues. The pupils from Glenlola chose to focus on Fairtrade and global poverty.
Promoting E-Safety
On Tuesday 9th October 2012 our local, community policeman Ken Bulter was back in school again talking to Junior school about Internet related crime. Ken highlighted the dangers of using the Internet, especially social networking sites. He explained how personal information and in particular the use of photographs can easily be misused.
